Violence by armed gangs over the past ten days has forced around 30,000 people in Haiti's capital and nearby areas to flee their homes, according to the UN World Food Programme (WFP). Much of the violence has focused on Cité Soleil, a poor neighborhood in Port-au-Prince where humanitarian organizations are delivering life-saving aid.
Residents like Anidette Saint Fleur from Quartier Blanchard have fled shootings and fires set by gangs, leaving behind all possessions except identification documents. She described living without shelter and food for her children amid ongoing insecurity.
Similarly, Dorlean Boudin from Sarthe, near Cité Soleil, reported attackers using machetes, setting houses on fire, and looting shops. She highlighted the difficulty of saving money for emergencies while lacking sufficient food and water for her family.
The WFP has reached about 8,500 displaced people from Cité Soleil with emergency food assistance, including rice, pulses, oil, and fortified flour. Meanwhile, nine WFP-supported schools serving roughly 12,000 children have suspended meal distributions due to the violence.
