The World Academy for Endurance Medicine was established in 2022 through a partnership between the World Athletics Health & Science Department and the International Institute for Race Medicine. Its main goals are to safeguard athlete health and provide educational support to medical professionals involved in road running and other endurance sports.
Developed by global experts, the Academy offers standardized concepts, procedures, and protocols in race medicine to healthcare personnel, enhancing medical leadership at mass-participation endurance events. Education is delivered via eLearning platforms, courses, and conferences.
The program has been adopted by over 200 mass-participation endurance events and has engaged more than 500 medical staff and volunteers. It supports a community including Race Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Road Races, medical staff, and volunteers in endurance sports such as running, cycling, and triathlon.
Race Medical Directors are certified every three years at no cost as part of their continuing medical education. Other medical professionals may join through a membership program, contributing to advancing medical standards in endurance events.
