After a series of record-breaking performances in Shanghai, many athletes will continue their rivalries at the Wanda Diamond League in Xiamen on Saturday, 23 May. In the men’s 400m hurdles, three-time world champion and world record-holder Karsten Warholm will compete against 2022 world champion Alison dos Santos. Dos Santos recently defeated Warholm in the 300m hurdles in Shanghai and has held a recent advantage in their head-to-head matchups, finishing ahead of Warholm in their last two 400m hurdle races. They will be joined by world leader Trevor Bassitt, 2022 world bronze medallist Abderrahman Samba, and two-time Diamond League Final winner Kyron McMaster.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Olympic champion Masai Russell returns to face a strong field, including world champion Ditaji Kambundji, three-time world indoor champion Devynne Charlton, world record-holder Tobi Amusan, and two-time world champion Danielle Williams. Charlton placed second behind Russell in Shanghai with a national record of 12.38, while Amusan was third. Russell set the meeting record and a world-leading time of 12.25 in Shanghai.
The women’s 200m features three global gold medallists from Shanghai: two-time world champion Shericka Jackson, two-time Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, and 2023 world 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson. Jackson won in Shanghai with a time of 22.07, her fastest since the 2023 Diamond League Final, followed by Miller-Uibo at 22.26 and Richardson at 22.42.
The men’s 100m in Xiamen will bring together the top eight finishers from Shanghai, with South Africa’s Gift Leotlela having won there in 9.97 seconds. He will compete against Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and USA’s Kenny Bednarek, both of whom ran 9.98 seconds in Shanghai.
The women’s 3000m steeplechase promises a close contest as Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai, who narrowly won in Shanghai over world champion Faith Cherotich, meets her rival again. Olympic champion Winfred Yavi will also make her season debut in the event, alongside Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani and Ethiopia’s Kena Tufa, both of whom have recently run inside nine minutes.
