An Israeli airstrike targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon's capital, resulting in further displacement among civilians already affected by months of conflict, according to the United Nations.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric described the strike as "a very alarming development" and expressed deep concern about reports of civilian deaths, including among children.
This incident is the first attack on Beirut since the April 17 ceasefire announcement and its extension between Lebanon and Israel. The UN reiterated calls for all parties to exercise maximum restraint and fully respect international humanitarian law.
After the airstrike, new displacement orders were issued for three villages in the South and Nabatieh Governorates, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), forcing more civilians to seek refuge elsewhere. Over one million people remain displaced in Lebanon, including 126,000 in more than 600 collective shelters, with most displaced people residing outside formal shelters.
Humanitarian partners continue to support civilians in conflict-affected and hard-to-reach areas, facilitating 110 aid movements since hostilities began on March 2. Despite challenges such as insecurity, movement restrictions, unexploded ordnance, and damaged infrastructure, aid efforts have delivered over 160,000 blankets, 120,000 mattresses, more than 100,000 hygiene kits, 50,000 menstrual hygiene kits, 3.7 million litres of bottled water, and over 65,000 cubic metres of water via trucking operations.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers report extensive military activities by Israeli Defense Forces across the operational area, including armoured movements, engineering works, logistical traffic, significant firing incidents, and projectile trajectories mostly originating from Israeli positions. Peacekeepers and their positions have been directly impacted, with five UN personnel casualties recorded since the start of the fighting.
The UN has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of peacekeepers amid ongoing hostilities.
