The United Nations Security Council held a closed-door meeting to discuss recent missile and drone attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which caused damage and injured civilians, according to a UN spokesperson.
During the meeting, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, briefed members on the incidents. The UN noted the Secretary-General's condemnation of all unlawful attacks since the conflict began on 28 February and emphasized adherence to Security Council resolution 2817 (2026), calling for protection of civilians and infrastructure. The resolution was adopted following Iranian attacks on neighboring states. UN Personal Envoy for the Middle East conflict, Jean Arnault, continues diplomatic efforts, including consultations with the Turkish foreign minister, for a lasting resolution.
The Security Council meeting was requested by Bahrain after the attacks on the UAE's oil terminal in Fujairah. Bahrain's Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei described the attacks as part of a deliberate pattern of destabilization in the Gulf region, labeling them violations of resolution 2817 and evidence of Iranian non-compliance.
UAE Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab reported that Iran launched 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four unmanned aerial vehicles against the country, resulting in a fire in the Fujairah oil industry zone and injuries to three civilians. He stated that UAE air defenses intercepted most threats, minimizing damage, and asserted this attack is not isolated, citing previous interceptions of missiles and drones.
