The CDC announced the passing of Suzy Ellis, a participant in its Tips From Former Smokers® campaign, who died at age 57 following a stroke her doctors attributed to her smoking history. After her stroke, Ellis quit smoking and publicly shared her experience to help others recognize the risks and benefits of quitting. She supported tobacco education campaigns to prevent people from starting and to motivate current smokers to quit. The CDC expressed condolences to Ellis's family, friends, and loved ones in an official statement.

Ellis was also remembered as a devoted mother, passionate reader, and entrepreneur. More details about her story can be found on the CDC's campaign website.
